When worlds collide

“It feels like different worlds are colliding.”

I remember saying that sentence to my husband the day we were married. It had nothing to do with our wedding/marriage, though. It was something that happened after.

Our wedding reception was held at a banquet facility that had a small, attached hotel. All the hotel rooms were booked for the wedding party and out-of-town guests, friends from our high school/college years.

After the reception, the fun didn’t stop. In the hotel, card games started. Music was playing. All our friends – my friends from high school, my friends from college and my husband’s friends – were together, laughing and having a good time.

“It feels like different worlds are colliding.”

It gave me joy to see everyone getting along, but it felt strange. In my mind, I had my life neatly divided into chapters – childhood, high school, college, early career. In that moment, the characters from those chapters scrambled together. It was good, but it was weird.

I think of that often when I think about evangelization. I tend to view my life in segments. I have my faith life, my family life, my social life, my professional life…. Evangelism feels like bringing one life into another, one world into another, and it feels strange and weird, maybe a bit uncomfortable.

But when I get past the weird feelings and trust the Holy Spirit to give me the words, actions and love I need, bringing Jesus to the people in my world has been good, and it has brought me great joy.

So let the worlds collide.
